Green Perfume Bottle

Green Perfume Bottle
4"x6"
Acrylic on panel

I recently found this green perfume bottle and thought it would look nice with red cherries and a purple background! It took me a little while to match the bright greens in the bottle. I like the gold accents..I'm always looking for unusual objects that I can paint!

Perfume Bottle And Cherries

Perfume Bottle And Cherries
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

Someone gave me this beautiful perfume bottle, and when I found cherries at the grocery store I knew I needed to make a painting! I tried many different colors for the background...I even pulled out a swatch book to get a feel for what I wanted. I've never painted a gold background before, but I think it works well with the red, purples, and blues.

Perfume Bottle with White Beads

Perfume Bottle with White Beads

Acrylic on panel

I found these beautiful white beads and wanted to incorporate them into a still life...wasn't sure how to approach it...decided to section it off and play with the lights and darks...happy with the way it turned out!

I Enjoy Being a Girl #3

I Enjoy Being a Girl #3
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

This is the second perfume bottle I painted recently, but the third in a series of paintings that I think make simple statements about being female. Most of the time I am interested in the color combinations and so I thought the perfume bottle would look really pretty with the cherries.
One of my favorite areas of the painting is the shadows that the cherries are casting on the background.

I Enjoy Being a Girl

I Enjoy Being a Girl - Stage 1
Someone recently asked if I had any blog posts that discussed the techniques I use, so I decided to take some process photos of a piece I was working on...hope this helps!

With the still lifes in particular I start with a very rough sketch (with my brush and a color similar to the color I tone the panel, but slightly darker...usually a brown, yellow ochre, and white). Then I slowly make my drawing color darker in value and refine it into a tighter, more finished drawing. (shown above)

I Enjoy Being a Girl - Stage 2

The next thing I do is to start filling in the colors I see...going from the darkest darks to the lightest lights. This painting was tricky because I'm used to focusing on making things round...lightest in the center and then gradually getting darker, but all bets are off when you're painting something like chrome...I just played around with it...

The finished painting! I deepened the darks and lightened the lights...put in all of the details, the foreground, background, and shadows....Since I use acrylics, I've found certain mediums very helpful, such as Golden Acrylic glazing gloss and liquitex slow dri blending medium. I've had a few great teachers. Clint (Clinton T. Hobart) has really helped me learn these techniques.
