Red Pepper

"Red Pepper"6x6 Acrylic on panel
New painting up for auction...when I go to the grocery store, antique store...or any where to pick out something to paint for a still life, I try to find something interesting about the piece of produce or object..something that makes it fun to paint...I picked out two peppers at the store but this guy ended up being the star of the show.

Red Onion and Mushrooms

Red Onion and Mushrooms
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

I had these mushrooms and had painted them with eggplants before, so was trying to think of something else ...Thought they would look good with a red onion...Love the stem on this one...I just found a new glazing medium by Golden that really makes the colors pop...Haven't painted an onion in years, but had fun...

Baby Eggplants

Baby Eggplants
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

We were going to a farmers market down the street that closed down recently...found another one that is also great and sells exotic fruit and veggies(which is where these baby eggplants came from)...I struggled a bit with the cast shadows, which are fairly new to me...I'm experimenting with new techniques and mediums(for example putting in the shadows before I paint in the background and using acrylic glazing gloss, both of which have helped)...

Plums

Plums
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

Just finished this painting...I've been concentrating a lot on still lifes lately...mostly for practice in making things look round, but also to put up for auction....my boyfriend Clinton Hobart who has been painting still lifes for years,  has been a huge influence in this respect...This is the first painting I've played with reflective light and really enjoyed it...had never painted plums before...the lemon plum(on the left) was tricky but I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out...

Citrus Medley

Citrus Medley
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

I've really enjoyed painting grapefruit, so I decided to try making a piece with oranges and lemons...I started the painting with the half an orange and lemon slice..when I was almost through painting them I thought they looked lonely, so decided to add the orange slice on the right..I think the composition is stronger now, and I really like the color of the foreground /background...I think it has a very Florida feel to it...

Pears and Cranberries

Pears and Cranberries
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

The bumps on the pear on the left are what drew me to it when I saw it in the grocery store and were  fun to paint...challenging but fun..I've painted pears before, but have never studied the form like I did with this one...
I think its the bumps  on the one on the left that give it personality...

New tomato painting....I love the shapes of the stems....This was good practice for me...I struggled with some aspects of the piece, like the cast shadows behind the stems, but I'm pretty happy with the way it came out...

This teacup was laying around the house and I thought it would be fun to paint... Makes me think of Alice in Wonderland...I like the idea of all of the cherries piled up in the teacup with one  standing proudly beside it who decided to jump ship...

Apple and Cinnamon Stick II

Apple and Cinnamon Stick II
6"x6"
Acrylic on panel

Companion piece to the apple painting I posted recently. Each apple has a different shape and color which gives it its own unique personality. I like the green in the background...don't know why, but makes me think of The Wizard of Oz...scene with the flying monkeys...all of those beautiful colors...

Fairy Tale Eggplants & Mushroom

"Fairy Tale Eggplants and Mushrooms"6x6 Acrylic on panel

I was at Whole Foods looking for something to paint. I saw these little eggplants and thought they were cute. Then I noticed they are called fairy tale eggplants. What goes better with a fairy tale Eggplant  than a mushroom!? Makes me think of the Smurfs or Fantasia.

"Coconut and Pineapple"
6x6 Acrylic on panel
Just finished another still life study...I liked the shape of the coconut..thought it would be fun to paint...and who doesn't like pineapples and coconuts (makes me think of pina coladas)...second pineapple slice I've painted and a bit of a struggle, but I think the whole thing came together once I put in the background.

Arsenic and Apple

Arsenic and Apple
10"x10"
Acrylic on panel

This is a still life I finished not long ago, where the desire was to incorporate an object with a piece of fruit. I like the fairytale element and the colors. I've had this goblet for years and have always wanted to put it into a painting. The piece was on the easel in the photo which appeared in the recent Lake George Mirror article.
